During my research I was able to find mainly 4 different type of magazine cover which gives the reader/viewer the hint that what type of magazine its gonna be.
Starting with Image/photo based cover deign, this is one of the most common type of magazine cover page involving 1-2 person looking at the camera. Almost all fashion and men magazine have this type of cover page.
Illustration based magazine cover: As the name suggests have illustrations rather then a picture. These type of magazine focus on presenting Unique ideas extraordinary or funny things. However magazine which are independently published also use this type of cover page.
Concept based magazine cover: In these type of magazine cover when the audience sees it they should easily understand what type of magazine it is, like in the example pic the magazine is about home and design so husband and wife are siting together in home telling us about that idea. These type of magazine may prove effective however are hard to pull off as you need to keep your message clear for the audience without any extra or less details.
Topography Based magazine cover: Sometime power of words is greater then picture , and they can convey the message more clear. This is where topography based magazine cover steps in. Such covers are rare these days however are seen more then illustration based cover. However, there is a chance that in future cover like these will become more popular.
